The surface integrity of titanium is critical to its performance as a spring to support this all of the Titanium springs we produce (in fact all of the springs we produce) are mandrel coiled. We also recommend that Titanium springs are shot peened or at the very least vapour blasted to improve not only the material surface but also the fatigue life.
Titanium can offer significant weight savings when compared to other materials, however it is useful to remember that where the application is highly stressed an increased wire diameter will be required due to the lower material modulus.
The highest weight savings that can be achieved are normally from extension springs where due to the reduced material strength less active coils will be required to achieve the same performance. Compression spring savings vary from application to application.
We currently produce springs from Beta C Titanium (AMS4957) which is†currently regarded as being the ‘best’ spring grade. We also produce springs from other Titanium grades such as Grade 5 (AMS4928).
If you have an application where you would like to achieve a weight saving please dont hesitate to contact us.
